Border Agents Take Fugitive Into Custody, Wanted for Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

CALEXICO, Calif. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Calexico downtown port of entry took a 27-year-old fugitive into custody yesterday who was wanted on felony charges for attempted murder of a Coachella Police Officer.

The incident occurred at about 4:25 p.m. on June 1, when Gildardo Davila, a U.S. citizen and resident of Coachella, Calif., was escorted on foot to the downtown port by Mexican law enforcement officials. CBP officers working the port’s pedestrian facility took custody of the man and escorted him to a secure area for further review.

A CBP officer conducted a query of the man’s fingerprints utilizing the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), confirming his identity, and revealing that he was the subject of a felony warrant issued at the request of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.

After the warrant was confirmed, the man was turned over to the custody of a Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy and transported to the Riverside County Jail.

On Thursday, May 25, 2017, at about 7:45 PM, an officer from the Coachella Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of Harrison Street and First Street, located in the city of Coachella. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and threw a handgun from the vehicle.

Shortly thereafter, the officer located the vehicle in the area of Calle Mendoza and Las Flores Avenue. The driver exited the vehicle and fled through a residential neighborhood. The officer chased after the suspect and the suspect who was armed with a handgun, shot and injured the officer. The officer called for assistance and multiple officers and medical personnel responded to the scene and the officer was airlifted to a local area hospital for treatment. The officer, who was struck by the gunfire, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
