EL PASO, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers working at the El Paso port of entry seized just over a half pound of methamphetamine Thursday. The drugs were hidden in the vaginal cavity of a pedestrian border crosser.

The seizure was one of 14 drug busts made by CBP officers working at ports of entry in El Paso, west Texas and New Mexico over the last seven days. During that period they seized 894 pounds of marijuana in 10 seizures, 35.7 pounds of cocaine in two busts, and 51.2 pound of methamphetamine in a pair of seizures.

“Homeland security is our primary mission however the vigilance and attention to detail applied by the CBP workforce routinely uncovers drug smuggling cases as well,” said El Paso Director of Field Operations Hector Mancha. “Every drug load we stop helps keep our local community safe as well as those in America’s heartland.”

The methamphetamine seizure occurred Thursday afternoon at the Paso Del Norte crossing when a 32-year-old U.S. citizen female arrived as a pedestrian from Mexico. CBP officers selected the woman for a secondary exam during which a CBP drug sniffing dog alerted to her body.

The search resulted in the discovery of a cylindrical object partially concealed in her vaginal cavity. Two additional bundles were also recovered later. The contents of the packages tested positive for methamphetamine.

The woman was turned over to U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations agents to face charges associated with the failed smuggling attempt.

In addition to the 14 drug busts, area CBP officers this week also identified and stopped 21 NCIC wanted subjects, recorded four intellectual property rights violations, and stopped a weapon and ammunition smuggling attempt. They also assessed $1,450 in civil penalties linked to eight agricultural violations.
