MIAMI– Police are searching around the campus of Florida International University for an escaped suspect Friday.
According to police, 21-year-old Ivan Zapata was picked up for an alleged sexual assault. The suspect was Baker Acted and taken to Kendall Regional Hospital.
There, police say Zapata fought the cop and attempted to take their gun. He then carjacked a woman at the hospital, eventually ditching the car on the FIU campus.
FIU officials say the school is not on lock down, but did send out an alert to students with the description of Zapata.
Nearby Sweetwater Elementary School and Dr. Carlos J. Finlay Elementary school are on lockdown.
Police describe Zapata as a white male with a tattoo on his face. He is approximately 190 pounds with a short build.
The suspect is wearing a hospital gown and no shoes.
