According to a release from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner, Aaron Carter’s cause of death was listed as “drowning,” with “difluoroethane and alprazolam” listed as contributing factors.

Difluoroethane is an aerosol propellant commonly found in spray cans, while alprazolam, also known as Xanax, is a medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

On November 5, 2022, the singer was found submerged in the bathtub at his home in Lancaster by his housekeeper, who called 911 and was instructed to perform CPR. Paramedics arrived on the scene, but Carter was pronounced dead at 11:14 a.m.

The Medical Examiner’s office conducted an autopsy on November 6, 2022, and the cause of death was certified on April 14, 2023. The manner of death was ruled an “accident.”

Aaron Carter had publicly battled addiction issues and acknowledged that his late sister, Leslie, who died of an overdose in 2012, introduced him to the practice of inhaling fumes from household items, also known as huffing.

He is survived by his one-year-old son, Prince, whom he shared with his fiancée, Melanie Martin.
