Cops Hunt For Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder of Police Officer

INDIANAPOLIS – Detectives have obtained an arrest warrant for 31-year-old Michael Swafford. He has been formally charged with Attempted Murder as a Level 1 Felony and Resisting Law Enforcement as a Level 6 Felony. The suspect is alleged to have shot at IMPD Officer Christopher Maher on March 8, 2016.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5 foot 10 inches, weighing approximately 190 pounds. The suspect should not be approached and should be considered armed and dangerous. IMPD urges the suspect to peacefully surrender himself to authorities ASAP.

From FOX59: “According to officials, officers tried to initiate a traffic stop around the intersection of Rural Street and Hoyt Avenue shortly before 4:30 a.m.

The vehicle, a blue Chevy Cavalier, fled and a police chase ensued. Police say the suspect fired shots from his vehicle, and the officer returned fire. Two people got out of the vehicle and ran off.

According to IMPD, one officer was injured, but not from the gunfire. The injuries, described as minor, were the result of flying glass. “
