Elizabethton, TENN. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his wife were on-board a plane that crashed near the Elizabethton Airport Thursday afternoon, according to the city’s Fire Chief, Barry Carrier.
The private plane crashed near a runway at Elizabethton Municipal Airport before bursting into flames. Everyone survived the crash although the NASCAR legend was taken to a hospital–injuries unknown.
Earnhardt Jr’s sister, Kelley Earnhardt, wrote on Twitter, “I can confirm Dale, Amy & Isla along with his two pilots were involved in a crash in Bristol TN this afternoon. Everyone is safe and has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation. We have no further information at this time…”

Highway 91 at Industrial Drive were blocked due to the investigation.
No word on what caused the crash. The NTSB will investigate.
