Superior, WI. — An explosion was reported at the Husky Energy oil refinery in Superior Thursday as emergency crews rushed wounded workers to the hospital.

“There is a report of multiple casualties. Initial reports are at least 20 casualties transported. Multiple agencies have responded,’’ Superior Fire Chief Steve Panger said.

Witnesses say the blast shook homes in the area. Police urged residents to avoid the scene.

Superior Police Chief Nick Alexander said “Typically fires that have the potential to be a larger scale, which something involving a refinery where there’s combustible materials and so on, we basically respond to assist the fire department and control access to the area, make sure that we’re stopping people from going into potentially an unsafe area.”

The Superior School District sent a message to parents, “At this time, there is no reason to evacuate any of the school buildings. We will be keeping all students in the buildings.”

The cause of the explosion is not known.
