Middletown, OH — A mother in Ohio has been charged with murder in the death of her 6-year-old son. The boy was initially reported missing before the mother later confessed, police say.

On Sunday morning, James Robert Hutchinson, age 6, was reported missing to police by his mother, Brittany Gosney.

Community members came out to help search for James and organized search teams also responded.

Police say upon further questioning of Gosney and her boyfriend, James Hamilton, they confessed that James was killed in Preble County “a few days ago.” His body was brought back to Middletown, where they live, and later dumped into the Ohio River.

Police did not say how the boy may have died.

Police are working with trained searchers in an attempt to recover James’ body. The river is very high and treacherous, so police say they will not be disclosing the exact location in hopes of avoiding another tragic incident.

Brittany Gosney, 29, was charged with murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. James Hamilton, 42, was charged with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Two other children were also removed from the home.

The investigation is ongoing.
