NEWARK, NEW JERSEY – Police in Newark on Tuesday afternoon were on the scene of an active shooting where two police officers were shot, officials said.
The gunfire broke out near Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue in Newark.
Scanner reports indicated the suspect was armed with a rifle and firing from a rooftop.

It was unclear what preceded the shooting.
NJ Gov. Phil Murphy said, “I am aware of and closely monitoring an unfolding situation in Newark. I am in touch with local authorities and the State is providing resources as requested. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”
The ATF and the FBI also responded to the scene. The wounded officers were reported to be in stable conditions.
