BREAKING NEWS: 2 Dead And 30 Injured After Amtrak Train Derails Near Philadelphia

CHESTER, Pa. — Two people have died and 30 have sustained injuries after an Amtrak train collided with a backhoe.

There were 341 passengers and seven crew members on board Palmetto train 89 at the time of the incident.

Officials have now confirmed that two people have died on the train traveling from New York to Savannah, Georgia.

An Amtrak spokesperson released a statement: “This morning, Amtrak Train 89, operating from New York to Savannah, Georgia, struck a backhoe that was on the tracks and derailed the lead engine south of Philadelphia.”

Emergency services are currently on the scene aiding the passengers.

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak, is a partially government-funded American passenger railroad service.

Amtrak operates more than 300 trains each day on 21,300 miles (34,000 km) of track with select segments having civil operating speeds of 150 mph (240 km/h) and connecting more than 500 destinations in 46 states.
