LOS ANGELES — Two brothers were convicted yesterday afternoon of fatally beating their neighbor nearly three years ago.

On Tuesday, the jury found Flavio Macias Jr., 31, guilty of first-degree murder. Jurors also found true a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a hammer, during the commission of the killing.

Macias Jr.’s brother and co-defendant, Jonathan Macias, 26, was convicted of second-degree murder.

Flavio Macias Jr. faces a possible maximum sentence of 53 years to life in state prison, while Jonathan Macias could be sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison.

Deputy District Attorney Michelle Weiske, who prosecuted the case, said on Aug. 24, 2015, Flavio Macias Jr. attacked his neighbor, Luis Segura, 44, with paving stones and a hammer. Jonathan Macias served as a lookout.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the location, the Macias brothers barricaded themselves in their home. Law enforcement used tear gas and a K-9, at which point the defendants exited the home and were arrested, the prosecutor added.

Prosecutors did not reveal a motive for the brutal killing.
