Fort Lauderdale — A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy faces several misdemeanor petit theft charges after stealing DVDs and action figures from a Lauderdale Lakes Walmart.

BSO public corruption unit detectives arrested Deputy Henry Guzman at 11 a.m. Monday when he reported to Internal Affairs at the Public Safety Building. The 13-year veteran was suspended with pay and transported to the Main Jail. He is expected to be suspended without pay after the State Attorney’s Office formally files the charges.

The Public Corruption Unit began investigating Guzman after receiving information that he was stealing from the Walmart store, located at 3001 N. State Road. 7 in Lauderdale Lakes. Investigators said on three separate dates in May, Guzman entered the Walmart store while wearing his BSO uniform and stole DVDs and action figures. Walmart reported a loss of nearly $200 for the retail theft.

“Absolutely no one is above the law. His actions are disgraceful, and in no way are a reflection of the good, hardworking men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office. I commend the work of the Public Corruption Unit for its commitment to hold deputies accountable for any criminal activity,” Sheriff Scott Israel said.
