The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office has announced the cause of death for Ty Wells, a former University of Arizona swimmer.

Wells, 23, died on January 27 due to natural causes, caused by a bacterial infection (disseminated streptococcal) resulting from a prolonged upper respiratory tract infection.

The cause of death was determined through a post-mortem examination and laboratory testing.

Wells was a breaststroke specialist who swam for the Wildcats from 2018 to 2022. He was a native of Manteca, California and placed 12th in the 100 breast at the Pac-12 Championships last season.

University officials stated that Wells received his bachelor’s degree in health science and physiology in May 2022.
