The Church of Scientology’s New England division is moving its headquarters from a historic hotel after struggling to renovate it.

An office complex in the Allston neighborhood of Boston was announced as the future nerve center for the local Scientologists just a month after the church put the Hotel Alexandra for sale.

The church bought the Alexandra in 2008 with the hopes of renovating it for the new headquarters.

But it could not come up with the proceeds as it struggled to sell the church’s former longtime regional base of operations on Beacon Street in Back Bay.

The church was finally able to sell the nearly 28,000 sq ft property in 2013, but the $10.5m price tag was $2million short of the price it had asked when the estate went on the market three years earlier, according to the Boston Business Journal.

Meanwhile it was estimated that the cost of renovating the 137-year-old Alexandra hotel would be around $17million.

The church paid $15million for the Allston office building as well as several surrounding properties, borrowing some of the funds from the International Church of Scientology.

‘It gives us a stable place where we can help people with our services while not having to be in the real estate business anymore,’ Kevin Hall told The Boston Globe.

According to Fortune.com, the Church of Scientology has over $1.5Billion tied up in real estate.
