CAHOKIA ILLINOIS — Howard Sutton, a WWII veteran and long time resident of Cahokia was found deceased during an early morning house fire at his residence on Wednesday October 18, 2017 at 1:30 am.

After an initial investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s office, and from evidence found during an autopsy performed on Sutton, there were “circumstances found to be suspicious enough to investigate this incident as a homicide,” police said.

Herald & Review reported: St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said he could not comment Thursday on his findings from the autopsy until toxicology reports come back, which could take weeks.

The fire presented a challenge for firefighters when rounds of ammunition stored inside the home exploded.

Kraft said investigators were able to determine those exploding rounds did not kill Sutton, but did not elaborate.
