COLLEGE PARK, MD – After abruptly resigning from his position, the mayor of College Park was taken into custody on numerous charges related to child pornography.

Patrick Wojahn, 47, is facing 56 counts of possession and distribution of child pornography, according to a statement from the Prince George’s County Police Department on Thursday.

Wojahn’s home in College Park was searched by police on Tuesday, and they seized several electronic devices, including cell phones, a tablet, and a computer.

Police began investigating after being notified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on Feb. 17 that a social media account was distributing suspected child pornography. The detectives traced the account back to Wojahn.

Wojahn had served as the mayor of College Park, which includes the University of Maryland campus, since winning the election in 2015.

He submitted his resignation on Wednesday after business hours, according to a statement from city officials.

In his resignation letter, which was released by the city, Wojahn mentioned plans to deal with his mental health and asked for residents to pray for his family.
