Denver Police Probe Crime Spree That Left Teen Dead At Jewish School

The Denver Police Department is investigating a string of crimes that occurred Wednesday in which a Jewish student was fatally shot.

The incidents started in the 2700 block of West Alameda Avenue where police responded to a car burglary. Next, police were alerted to a carjacking near the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Grape Street. Then, a man was robbed a gunpoint near North Lafayette Street and East Colfax Avenue. The victim was shot but is expected to survive.

Finally, around 11:30 p.m., a shooting occurred at the Yeshiva Toras Chaim school on the 1500 block of North Stuart Street. The victim at the school, identified as 18-year-old Shmuel Silverberg, was shot multiple times in the chest, sources say.

On Thursday, Denver Police arrested 4 of the 5 suspects involved in the crimes. The police continue to maintain that the incident was not a biased hate-crime.

We are caring for our faculty, staff, students, and their families in the face of this tragic and incomprehensible act of violence. We are grateful for the support we are receiving from our Denver community and from around the country, and for the work of local law enforcement authorities who have made this their top priority. Our community is seeking solace and privacy at this time.”
