TUCSON, Ariz. – Two Mexican nationals recently attempted to slip back into the United States separately after having been convicted of sex crimes committed in California and then deported.

Tucson Station agents arrested Vicente Gonzalez-Hernandez in the desert near Sasabe late Thursday. During processing, agents learned that Gonzalez was convicted of felony assault to commit mayhem/rape in California, and removed from the U.S. in February after serving one year in prison.

The second incident occurred Saturday outside the city limits of Douglas, Arizona, when agents arrested Jose Luis Cornejo Contreras. Agents conducting a records check on Contreras found multiple convictions of battery and one conviction of sexual intercourse with a minor, for which he was incarcerated in California.

Both men now face charges for illegal re-entry as a convicted felon.
