Deputies Injured, Backseat Prisoner Killed During Wrong-Way Crash

HOUSTON, Texas — On Sunday July 21, 2019, a Harris County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle was traveling eastbound on the eastbound entrance ramp to the Westpark tollway at around 11:30 p.m.

The 34-year-old field training deputy, his 36-year-old probationary patrol deputy and a 42-year-old male prisoner, (all the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat restraints) had left the scene of a major collision and were transporting the intoxicated prisoner to the Joint Processing Center.

A 2013 Lexus driven by 39-year-old Patrick M Njogu, was traveling the wrong way, westbound on the eastbound entrance ramp of the Westpark Tollway, when it struck the patrol vehicle head on.

All occupants in both vehicles were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest by the Houston Fire Department.

The male prisoner was later pronounced deceased at 0026hrs.

The FTO deputy received two broken bones in his foot, numerous bruising and lacerations and is in stable condition.

The probationary deputy received a head injury and is currently in stable condition.

The suspected DWI driver Njogu, sustained a broken leg in the collision, and is currently in stable condition.

Patrick M Njogu, has 5 previous DWI arrests and 3 previous convictions from the state Illinois and Missouri.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted the of charge felony murder on Njogu.
