LOS ANGELES — It was a scary moment for one mom Wednesday when her newborn baby and toddler were accidentally locked inside her vehicle in a Valencia parking lot with outside temperatures over 80 degrees. Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station Deputy Parra and Deputy Romo responded to the emergency call.

Deputy Parra, a mother of four children herself, immediately empathized with the mother’s distress.

Deputy Parra said, “We thought about breaking the side windows but quickly realized that we would be placing the children at risk of being injured by flying glass. Our only options were breaking the front windshield or rear windshield.”

As they prepared to break a windshield, Deputy Drake rolled up to the scene. Quickly retrieving an auto lock out tool that he had, he immediately got to work on the car door with Deputy Parra assisting.

The two of them successfully opened the vehicle’s door and safely rescued the two boys, ages 1-month-old and 2-years-old.

The newborn baby and toddler were perspiring heavily and crying, but they were unharmed.

The look of relief and gratitude on the mother’s face said it all as she clutched her sweaty newborn baby boy to her chest and hugged him tightly. -LASD
