TALLAHASSEE, FL. — On February 19, 2018, a video deemed to be a threat to Wakulla County Schools was distributed by an unidentified subject via Snapchat, an imaging and multimedia mobile application on social media. The video showed a person’s hands opening a case containing a Spike’s SL15 Tactical Rifle. The video shows the rifle being removed from the case and loaded with a magazine. The rifle is then picked up by the subject and displayed a caption underneath that read, “Don’t go to school.”

At 4:14 p.m., an anonymous complaint was received by the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office regarding the post. Patrol deputies and Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) expeditiously identified the post as originating from Kane Watson, an 18 year old Wakulla County resident. Deputies and Detectives traveled to Mr. Watson’s Crawfordville residence, arriving approximately 45 minutes from the time of the original complaint.

After being mirandized, Watson admitted to making and sending the video via social media, voluntarily turned over his cellular telephone, and the SL 15 tactical rifle. The telephone and weapon were seized. Watson was arrested and transported to the CID office where he was interviewed further. While being interviewed by CID Detectives, Mr. Watson stated he posted the video as a means to deal with stress through humor.

Detectives charged Watson with violating the following Florida Statutes and booked him into the Wakulla County Jail for Written Threats to Kill or do Bodily Injury, a second degree felony and False Report concerning planting a bomb, an explosive, or a weapon of mass destruction, or concerning the use of firearms in a violent manner, a second degree felony.
