On Monday, authorities in Cancun, a popular Mexican tourist destination, reported that four bodies were discovered in the city’s hotel zone near the beach.

Officials did not immediately reveal the identities or nationalities of the victims. This announcement followed the shooting of a U.S. tourist in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos a week prior.

According to prosecutors, three of the bodies were found in a lot near one of Cancun’s beachside hotels along the Kukulkan Boulevard. Later, they discovered a fourth body in the undergrowth on the same lot, bringing the total number of victims to four.

While the deaths are being investigated, no cause of death has been given. Two suspects have been detained in connection with the killings.

Travelers have been advised by the U.S. State Department to “exercise increased caution,” particularly after dark, in popular Caribbean beach resorts in Mexico such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, which have previously been affected by violence from drug gangs.
