A Lion Air jet disappeared from radar in Indonesia Sunday on its way from Jakarta to Pangkalpinang city, a rescue agency says. Officials say the plane crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff.
188 souls were on-board the Boeing 737—flight JT-610. Indonesia’s finance ministry says 20 officials were among the passengers.

Lion Air spokesman Danang Mandala Prihantoro said in a brief statement: “We can confirm that one of our flights has lost contact, its position cannot be ascertained yet.”
“We cannot give any comment at this moment,” Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group said. “We are trying to collect all the information and data.”
An official for Indonesia energy firm Pertamina says debris, including plane seats, were found near its offshore facility in the Java sea.

The Guardian reported: Reports received at Tanjung Priok port in North Jakarta indicate the remains of the plane had been spotted.
A vessel traffic officer, Suyadi, told the Jakarta Post that at 6.45am he received a report from a tugboat that thad identified a downed plane.
“At 7:15am the tugboat reported it had approached the site and the crew saw the debris of a plane,” Suyadi told the Post. There was no reports about the passengers on board.
A tanker and cargo ship were approaching the site and a search and rescue vessel was also en route.
A large search and rescue operation is underway. The cause of the crash was not known.
