Mississippi Deputy Shot In The Head During ‘Hostage Situation’; ATF Responding

MADISON COUNTY, Miss. — Two Sheriff’s deputies were injured in a shooting in Madison County Thursday.

This morning around 7:30, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department responded to a hostage/kidnap situation. After Deputies made contact with the suspect, a chase ensued on Highway 16.

Deputies deployed stops sticks. The suspect’s vehicle left the roadway and came to a complete rest in a ditch at the intersection of Avondale Road and Highway 16. Upon exiting the vehicle, the suspect opened fire on the Deputies. Deputies sustained injuries due to gunfire and are in the hospital–one deputy, who was shot in the head, is in critical condition.

Deputies returned fire and the suspect is in custody. Schools in the area were placed on lockdown.

The  Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were responding to the scene.

It was unclear how the incident started of if any hostages were hurt.
