DAYTONA — NASCAR Driver Ryan Newman was involved in a serious crash at the finish line of the Daytona 500 Monday night as he attempted to get past Denny Hamlin, who won the race.

According to media on the track, Newman did not respond to radio communications from his team as medics attempted to put out the flames and reach the 42-year-old driver.

Newman was placed in an ambulance behind black screens to keep fans from seeing the transport — He was rushed to a local hospital.

Media members also said they were told to leave the pits.

Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon seemed somber as they spoke after the race. They did not provide an update in Newman’s condition.

NASCAR later released a statement saying Newman was in serious condition but is expected to survive his injuries.
