The driver involved in an incident near the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, where a pedestrian was fatally struck, is currently on the run.

According to Secret Service Uniformed Division Lt. Paul Mayhair, the driver was operating a 2006 blue Honda Accord when uniformed Secret Service officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue, just before 1:30 p.m.

The driver, who remains unidentified, initially complied by appearing to stop but then swiftly fled in a southbound direction, Mayhair stated. Ignoring a red light, the driver proceeded to strike multiple individuals who were crossing the street at a designated crosswalk.

Mayhair confirmed that one of the pedestrians, a 75-year-old man from Philadelphia, was hospitalized but succumbed to his injuries later. Additionally, two other individuals sustained minor injuries, including a 13-year-old girl, as reported by the Secret Service.
