A woman is dead and another person was injured after a car plowed into protesters in Minneapolis over the weekend. People were demonstrating after a black man was fatally shot earlier this month.

At 11:39 pm on Sunday evening, Minneapolis Police were monitoring a protest in the area of West Lake Street and Girard Avenue South when they observed, on camera, a vehicle traveling eastbound on Lake Street and drive into a group of protesters.

Additional squads were called to the scene as were several ambulances. Protesters pulled the suspect from the vehicle and, from reports of witnesses, began to strike the driver. Officers arrived and took custody of the driver.

Two injured protesters were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center via ambulance. One of those injured was in very critical condition. Officers transported the suspect to an area hospital for his injuries. All people involved are believed to be adults.

The Minneapolis Police Department was advised that a woman, who was critically injured in this crash, did die at the hospital.

While it is unclear if the act was intentional, police say the investigation indicates that ‘the use of drugs or alcohol by the driver may be a contributing factor in the crash.’

The Medical Examiner will release the identity of the victim, along with the nature and cause of death in the days to come.
