Northwest Indiana – On Sunday, October 23, 2022, at approximately 3:40 a.m., the Lowell Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call stating that someone had shot at them in their vehicle.  The caller was traveling on I-80 EB near Burr St. when someone driving a black, GMC Yukon shot at the victim’s vehicle, a black Acura MDX.  One of the occupants in the vehicle sustained a gunshot to a lower extremity.  The driver of the Acura continued to drive away from the shooter on I-80 until they couldn’t see the suspect.  The victim eventually stopped on the shoulder of the I-94 exit ramp to SR 49.  Trooper Burgin responded to the scene and spoke to the occupants of the vehicle, while the victim that was shot was transported to Franciscan Hospital in Chesterton for treatment.  A bullet hole was located in the passenger door.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division at the Lowell Post responded to the scene. During their investigation, they determined the shooter to be Andres Perez, 43, from East Chicago, IN.  At the time of this shooting, Perez was out on bond for attempted murder of another individual in July 2022.

Detectives applied for and received two search warrants (residence and vehicle) and an arrest warrant for Andres Perez.  These warrants were all served this morning, October 25th, by ISP North Zone SWAT, and the District 13 CID (Criminal Investigations Division).  Perez was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail where he is being held without bond.

Perez is preliminarily charged with the following offenses:

  • Attempted Murder- Level 1 Felony
  • Stalking While Armed with a Deadly Weapon- Level 4 Felony
  • Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon- Level 5 Felony
  • Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm (3 counts)- Level 5 Felony
