La Quinta, California — Riverside County deputies fatally shot the owner of the popular ‘Joshua Tree Coffee Company,’ during a traffic stop.

On Monday, February 15, 2021, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department received a call regarding the brandishing of a firearm in the area of Simon Drive and Highway 111, city of La Quinta. The suspect was identified as Royce Robertson, 33 years old, resident of Joshua Tree. Dispatch received information that the suspect displayed a handgun at the victim and threatened to kill him. While deputies were en-route to the location, deputies were advised by dispatch that Robertson’s vehicle had fled the scene and was traveling westbound on Highway 111.

A deputy from the Palm Desert Station located Robertson’s vehicle near the intersection of Desert Horizons and Highway 111. The deputies attempted a traffic stop as Robertson’s vehicle traveled into the Desert Horizons Country Club. The vehicle came to a stop and Robertson exited the vehicle. Robertson was in possession of a handgun and pointed it at the deputies. At that time, a deputy involved shooting occurred.

Calfire arrived on scene and Robertson was pronounced deceased. An air pistol that looked nearly identical to a real handgun was located at the scene. No others were injured during this incident.

“He was a good person,” Demetria Robertson, the victim’s sister told KCAL. “They should all feel bad about this. They didn’t kill a bad guy, they killed a good guy.”
