A 34-year-old man pleaded no contest to assaulting his girlfriend’s friend two years ago in Torrance.

Paul George Gebert entered the plea to one felony count of “assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury.”

Deputy District Attorney William Chung of the Justice System Integrity Division said Gebert was immediately sentenced to three years of formal probation, 30 days of Caltrans work and six months of anger management counseling.

Gebert, who at the time was an off-duty officer with the Irvine Police Department, went to his girlfriend’s home in Torrance on July 8, 2018. Once inside, Gebert saw a man on the couch and started beating him. The man, who suffered serious injuries, was a friend of Gebert’s girlfriend, the prosecutor said.

The case was investigated by the Torrance Police Department.
