On Monday, a dairy farm in Dimmitt, Texas experienced an explosion and fire that resulted in the death of at least 18,000 cattle.

The South Fork Dairy’s building, where they take cattle before moving them into the milking area and a holding pen, was affected by the fire from the explosion, according to Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera. Only a small percentage of the farm’s cows survived.

According to KFDA, the Animal Welfare Institute described this as the deadliest barn fire for cattle overall and the most devastating barn fire in Texas since 2013 when they began tracking barn fires.

Margie Fishman, Public Relations Manager with AWF said, “We hope the industry will remain focused on this issue and strongly encourage farms to adopt commonsense fire safety measures. It is hard to imagine anything worse than being burned alive.”

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality arrived on the scene to assist the owner with the removal of carcasses and other materials.

One person was injured in the explosion and was in critical condition.

The cause of the explosion is underway.
