Florida Corrections Officer Dies After Collapsing

BUSHNELL, Fla. – Correctional Officer Sergeant Jorge Ramos, of South Florida Reception Center (SFRC), died Sunday afternoon following his participation in a statewide Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) competition at Sumter Correctional Institution on Friday, April 29.

Governor Rick Scott said, “Ann and I join all Floridians and the Florida Department of Corrections in mourning the loss of Jorge Ramos. As a member of the SFRC Correctional Emergency Response Team, Sgt. Ramos routinely went above and beyond the call of duty. The State of Florida is truly grateful for his dedicated service to public safety.”

Secretary Julie Jones said, “Sgt. Ramos was an outstanding example of the character and values that set our Department’s employees apart. His tragic death is a reminder that our state’s uniformed men and women risk their lives every day in the pursuit of public safety. I extend my most sincere condolences to the Ramos family, and offer them my heartfelt gratitude for sacrificing so much in the service of our state.”

Sgt. Ramos joined the Department on August 17, 2007. As a member of the SFRC CERT, he was tasked with responding to security emergencies and ensuring the safety of all staff and inmates within the institution. Sgt. Ramos is survived by his wife and young daughter.
