Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano, will be at East 161st Street between River and Gerard Avenues in the Bronx at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 1st, reminding all New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks for the end of Daylight Saving Time this weekend.

“Since last Friday, five of our children, our friends, our neighbors lost their lives in preventable tragedies – in fires in homes without working smoke detectors. A working smoke detector is vital to escaping and surviving a fire,” said Commissioner Cassano. “While we have recently seen historically low rates of fire deaths, we continue to find that in the overwhelming majority of those deaths, no working smoke detector was present.”

Throughout the weekend, members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education team will be distributing 1000 smoke detectors, as well as batteries, electronic candles, and fire safety literature in multiple languages at 16 major transportation hubs and shopping centers in all five boroughs. Smoke detectors and batteries have been generously donated to the FDNY Foundation by Duracell, Kidde and First Alert.
