Haitian President Jovenel Moise was fatally shot by gunmen at his private home overnight Wednesday. President Moise’s wife, Martine Moise, was also shot in the attack and has since been evacuated to Miami, Florida, according to reports.

“Early information suggests it was a group of people who spoke English and Spanish. They were armed with high-caliber weapons,” Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said, calling the crime a “barbaric act.”

“We are shocked and saddened to hear of the horrific assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and the attack on First Lady Martine Moïse of Haiti,” U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement. “We condemn this heinous act, and I am sending my sincere wishes for First Lady Moïse’s recovery. The United States offers condolences to the people of Haiti, and we stand ready to assist as we continue to work for a safe and secure Haiti.”
