Two of New York’s Finest helped a mother deliver a healthy baby girl early Monday morning in the Bronx.
The woman’s sister call 911 at about 3:00 a.m. and Police Officers Doris Vega and Timothy Canniff from the 48th Precinct got there in time to help with the delivery.

“She was standing and she was already in the midst of birth,” Officer Vega said.

“Instinct kicks in and you do what we’re trained and what you have to do,” Officer Canniff said.

Officer Vega new there was not much time before the baby was born and immediately new what to do. The officer was able to grab the newborn before she touched the floor.

Officer Vega is a 17 year veteran of the department with three children of her own, and she has done this before. It was about 10 years ago on Halloween when she delivered her first baby.

Officer Vega cut the umbilical cord and the mother and daughter were taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital.

As soon as they were able, they were right back at the mother’s side.

The newborn, who has not been named yet, weighed five pounds and measured 19 inches long.
