WISCONSIN — Chilling new details have emerged in the case of a Wisconsin girl who was kidnapped after witnessing her parents being killed.

According to the criminal complaint (found below), 22-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson blasted his way into Jayme Closs‘ home with a shotgun on Oct. 15, 2018 after James Closs, Jayme’s father, refused to open his front door.

After the father was shot, Jayme and her mother Denise locked themselves in a bathroom. Patterson broke down the door and allegedly told Closs’ mother to put tape over her daughter’s mouth, which she did before Patterson allegedly shot her.

After the killings, Patterson tied up Jayme and forced her into the trunk of his car before driving 70 miles to his home in Gordon, Wisconsin.

Jayme reportedly spent the next 88 days in his bedroom and was ordered to hide under his bed for up to 12 hours at a time when family and friends visited. According to the complaint, Patterson told Closs that “bad things would happen to her” if she didn’t follow his commands.

On January 10, 2019, a Douglas County woman was walking her dog when Closs approached her and asked for help. The woman took her to a neighbors’ house in order to call the police and to provide shelter. According to KARE-TV, Jayme told the neighbors she knew the name of the person who took her and explained that the same person had killed her parents. As they waited for police to arrive, Jayme also told the neighbors the captor had kept her just a few houses down, in the same Eau Claire Acres neighborhood of Gordon, Wisconsin.

Patterson was found later that day while out driving, presumably looking for Closs. When approached by deputies, he told them, “I did it.”

Patterson told investigators he spotted Jayme getting on a school bus one day and made up his mind to take her. Police say he previously had no ties to the Closs family.

Patterson is facing a total of four felony charges. They include kidnapping, armed burglary, and two counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
