NEW YORK – On Monday, two cars crashed at an intersection in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, resulting in at least seven injuries, with two fatalities, police said.

The wreckage was so severe that firefighters had to extract some people from the vehicles.

Three other victims were taken to Maimonides, with one in critical condition, while the remaining two were taken to NYU Langone in Brooklyn, according to WNBC.

According to surveillance footage, a white car was speeding and swerving before running a red light at the intersection. The white car collided with a black car passing through the intersection, resulting in the deaths of the black car driver and a pedestrian.

Police took one person into custody, who they believe to be the driver of the speeding white car.

It was unclear if the act was intentional.
