TEXAS – Houston Police Officer William “Bill” Jeffrey was fatally shot Monday morning while serving a felony warrant in Harris County. The suspected shooter was also killed.

Sgt. Michael Vance, 49, was also shot while serving the felony warrant. He remains in stable condition at a Houston hospital. Due to the undercover nature of Sgt. Vance’s assignment, police did not release his department photo.

“This has been a tragic day today,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said. “It is another reminder that police work is inherently dangerous.”

KSAT reported: The officers arrived at the apartment around 7:30 a.m., knocked on the door and spoke with a woman who answered it, Finner said. He said the man then came out and began shooting at the officers.

“You’ve got a suspect with a female girlfriend with small kids in that apartment complex and he still fired upon our officers,” Finner said. He said police returned fire and that the man died on the scene.

Officer Jeffrey, 54, joined HPD in December of 1990 and was assigned to the Major Offenders Division for almost 13 years. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later time.
