Indianapolis Prisoner Kills Sheriff’s Deputy In Failed Escape Attempt

MARION COUNTY, Ind. – A sheriff’s deputy was fatally beaten on Monday while transporting a jail inmate to a hospital visit in Indianapolis. Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy John Durm, 61, passed away at Eskenazi Hospital as a result of the attack, Sheriff Kerry Forestal said.

The assault occurred within the sally port, a fenced-off entry way of the Adult Detention Center.

The inmate responsible for the attack was identified as Orlando Mitchell, 34. After assaulting Deputy Durm, Mitchell stole the transport van and subsequently crashed it into a utility pole. Other deputies swiftly apprehended him. Mitchell is currently in stable condition at Eskenazi Hospital.

Officer Shane Foley of the Indianapolis police stated that the incident is being investigated as an intentional act of homicide.

Mitchell had been in jail since September 2022, awaiting trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Krystal Walton.

Deputy Durm served the sheriff’s department for 38 years. He leaves behind a wife and four children.
