Indianapolis Man Opens Fire On Police During Traffic Stop, Prompting SWAT Standoff

INDIANAPOLIS-On January 15, 2018 at approximately 7:30 p.m. officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Howard street and Shepard Street on the cities near southwest side. During the course of the traffic stop, a man exited the passenger side of the vehicle and started firing at the two officers inside the police vehicle, striking the vehicle multiple times. The officers did not return fire.

The suspect returned to the vehicle as the driver exited and surrendered themselves to police. The male suspect then fled in the vehicle.

Officers from all six of the city’s districts responded to assist in the search for the suspect. Through investigative methods, it was determined that the suspect entered a home in the 1300 block of South Belmont Avenue. IMPD’s SWAT team was called to the scene and negotiators attempted to contact the suspect multiple times. After attempts at negotiation were exhausted, officers obtained a signed warrant and entered the home. SWAT members located the suspect in the home and took him into custody.

Ryan McGill

27-year-old Ryan McGill was transported to Eskenazi hospital by Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services, for observation. Homicide Detectives arrested McGill on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and robbery. The Marion County Prosecutors Office will review the arrest and make a charging decision.
