A judge on Friday has ordered the Colorado theater shooter James Holmes to pay $955,000 in restitution to the victims of the 2012 theater shooting.

The order came from District Court Judge Carlos A. Samour, who presided over Holmes’ monthslong trial. In August, he sentenced Holmes to 12 consecutive life terms without parole plus 3,318 years.

Holmes murdered 12 people and tried to kill 70 more during a midnight showing of the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises in the Denver suburb of Aurora in the summer of 2012.

Prosecutors had sought restitution to pay for victims’ medications, mental health care and other needs.

It’s not known what kind of job Holmes will have in prison, but DOC inmates are paid 23 cents to $2 per day for performing various tasks, according to a 2012 memo from the Colorado Legislative Council Staff. They are only allowed to work 23 days a month.

They said the money would pay for victims’ psychiatric care, medical equipment, lost wages and other needs as a result of the mass shooting. Victims said they must pay for prosthetic limbs, occupational and speech therapy, travel expenses for attending the 4-month trial and future medical care.

Samour was required to give Holmes life without parole, rather than the death penalty, after a split jury decided the sentence.
