LONG BEACH, Calif. — A jury found a 35-year-old man guilty today of fatally shooting a man in the presence of a 6-year-old boy.

Deputy District Attorney Marlon Duke Powers said Jason Monroe Daniels was convicted of three felony counts in case NA106266: second-degree murder, child abuse under circumstances likely to produce or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The jury also found true allegations that the defendant personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, which caused great bodily injury and death.

The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 27 in Department S20 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch. Daniels faces up to 108 years to life in state prison.

On April 19, 2017, Daniels visited an ex-girlfriend’s family home in the 500 block of Cherry Avenue in Long Beach. While at the residence, the defendant became agitated when he saw victim William Luther Hayes outside spending time with the ex-girlfriend’s 6-year-old son, according to evidence presented at the trial.

Daniels exited the house, approached Hayes, 38, and shot him in front of the boy, the prosecutor said. Following the attack, the defendant fled the scene. Daniels was arrested two weeks later in Las Vegas, the prosecutor added.

The case was investigated by the Long Beach Police Department.
