NORFOLK, Va. — (NPD) – Norfolk police have identified the man involved in the attack on a police officer early this morning.

51-year-old Dale Patrick Bright of Virginia Beach has been charged with one count of malicious wounding by means of a caustic substance. Bright is currently being held without bond at the Norfolk City Jail on charges of malicious wounding by means of caustic substance.

Shortly before 10:00 Monday morning, a Norfolk police sergeant exited the Dunkin Donuts at 841 N. Military Highway. The sergeant was not on a call for service and was walking to his patrol vehicle in the parking lot when Bright approached. Unprovoked, Bright threw a liquid, caustic substance in the sergeant’s face and then ran from the scene.

The injured sergeant gave chase while calling for additional backup and relaying Bright’s location and description.

Bright was taken into custody in the 5700 block of E. Virginia Beach Boulevard by the injured sergeant and assisting officers.

The sergeant was transported from the arrest location to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries to his eyes, face, neck, and hands. The injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Police have not released a motive behind the attack and the investigation remains ongoing.
