WALTON, Ky. – A mother, along with her two children, were fatally stabbed in Northern Kentucky Sunday night, officials said.

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the apartment around 9 p.m. Sunday — located in the 100 block of Overland Ridge. There, they found the mother and her two daughters dead and a man injured. He was airlifted to a hospital with stab wounds.

The deceased are identified as 31-year-old Monique S. Pena, 12-year-old Nikki Romero-Pena and 3-year-old Katie Farrell-Pena.

The man air-lifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center is 36-year-old Matthew Farrell. Farrell sustained multiple stab wounds to his torso, neck and upper body and has since been discharged from the hospital. Deputies said Farrell is “currently cooperating with the investigation” and did not immediately name him as a suspect.

Farrell is the long-time boyfriend of Monique, officials said.

“It’s incredibly tragic in any situation where there’s a loss of life, but when you have a three-year-old and a 12-year-old who were a part of a gruesome death, that is something that you never forget,” said Lt. Philip Ridgell.

WXIX reported officials do not believe that other suspects were involved, or that any suspects remain at large.
