Killer in murder-suicide opened fire on deputies before killing himself, cops say

Monticello, GA – A homicide investigation in Monticello Sunday led deputies into a standoff in Putnam County.

Around 9:00 p.m., The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said Kira Ammons, age 41, of Monticello, GA, was found shot multiple times and later died.

Witnesses at the scene told law enforcement that James David Mathis, 38, of Eatonton, Putnam County, GA, was responsible for Ammons’ death. Ammons was Mathis’ ex-girlfriend.

Putnam County deputies responded to Mathis’ home in order to attempt to locate him. Upon arrival, deputies heard gunshots and a Putnam County deputy’s patrol vehicle was shot by Mathis.

Shortly thereafter, Mathis was located outside of his home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

Ammons and Mathis will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy.
