An East Los Angeles woman was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison today after she admitted to killing her 82-year-old grandmother in 2016.

Rebecca Surratt, 28, pleaded no contest to one count of second-degree murder in a negotiated plea agreement and was immediately sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Renee Korn.

According to the prosecutor, Surratt lived with her mother and grandmother, Maria Yslas, at a home in the 300 block of Woods Avenue. On May 6, 2016, Surratt and Yslas got into an argument and the defendant beat and killed her grandmother.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau investigated the case.
