Phoenix police homicide detectives have made an arrest in the death of 15-year-old Graciela Molina who was struck and killed by a stray bullet while sitting in her 2nd story bedroom Friday night.

The incident occurred on Friday, June 25, 2021, at about 8:15 p.m., in the area of 48th Street and Broadway. Sunday night, June 27, homicide detectives arrested 35-year-old Fernando Pina and booked him into jail for manslaughter in connection to the shooting.

Graciela was in her 2nd story bedroom with a couple of family members putting together a new bed when a stray bullet went through her window striking her. She was transported to a local hospital where she later passed away. Her loss devastated her family and left the community and investigators trying to wrap their heads around the heartbreaking case.

Phoenix homicide detectives initially had very little to go on. They enlisted the help of Community Response Detectives and worked tirelessly over the weekend knocking on doors, leaving door hangers, canvassing the neighborhood, and talking to as many people as possible. The Phoenix Police Public Affairs Bureau also shared Graciela’s story on social media and pushed out information to media outlets.

Those efforts paid off when a community member came forward with information that helped detectives narrow their search which led to Pina’s arrest.
