Man Beat Elderly Couple To Death For a Cell Phone, DA Says

LOS ANGELES — A 27-year-old transient was convicted today of murdering an elderly couple and stealing the wife’s cell phone in 2014.

Jurors deliberated for about six hours before finding Luke Fabela guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of first-degree residential burglary. The panel also found true the special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and murder during the commission of a burglary.

On Dec. 26, 2014, Fabela murdered Shirley Isom, 75, and Armie “Troy” Isom, 89, at their hillside estate home in La Verne. Both died of blunt force trauma. Fabela also stole a cell phone from the residence.

DNA evidence linked Fabela to the crime scene.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 30 when Fabela faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
