Man Charged After Family of 3 Was Killed While Trick-or-Treating

LOS ANGELES — A 20-year-old man was charged today with killing a family of three in a DUI crash on Halloween in Long Beach.

Carlo Adrian Navarro of Long Beach was charged with three counts each of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The charges include an allegation of causing death to multiple victims.

On Oct. 31, Navarro is accused of driving while intoxicated and crashing his vehicle into a family that was walking home from trick-or-treating at Country Club Drive and Los Cerritos Park Place.

Joseph Awaida, 30, died that night at a local hospital. His wife, 32-year-old Raihan Faisal Dakhil Awaida, and their 3-year-old son Omar were critically injured.

The child died on Nov. 2 and his mother died the next day as a result of their injuries from the crash.

Navarro  faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison if convicted as charged.

Prosecutors are requesting that he be held on no bail.
