LOS ANGELES — A 30-year-old man was charged today with killing the mother of his 1-year-old son during a custody exchange outside of a Hawthorne police station.

Jacob Ryan Munn, 30, of Hawthorne faces one count each of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The case includes a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait and allegations that Munn used a shotgun in the killing.

On April 7, Munn left his child inside the police station for his ex-girlfriend to pick up, prosecutors said. As victim Brenda Renteria, 28, approached the door the defendant allegedly shot and killed her, prosecutors added.

Munn is being held with no bail. If convicted as charged, the defendant faces death or life in prison without the possibility of parole. A decision on whether to seek capital punishment will be made at a later date.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s and Hawthorne Police Departments.
